Peter Webster (b Augusta,
Maine, May 31, 1947) Music Educator.
Peter Webster is the John Beattie Professor of Music Education and
Technology at the Bienen School of Music, Northwestern University in Evanston,
Illinois. Degrees in music education from the University of Southern Maine (BS)
and the Eastman School of Music at the University of Rochester (MM, PhD). Public
school music teacher in Maine, Massachusetts, and New York; fourteen years at
Case Western Reserve University; moved to Northwestern in 1988. Administrative positions include terms
as Department Chair and Associate Dean.
Teaching includes courses in philosophy, graduate research, music technology, assessment, and
creative thinking in music. Webster
has published work that includes over 75 articles and book chapters on
technology, music cognition, and creative thinking in music which have appeared
in journals and handbooks in and outside of music. He is the author of Measures of Creative Thinking in Music, an exploratory tool for
assessing music thinking using quasi-improvisational tasks. Webster is
co-author of Experiencing
Music Technology, 3rd edition Update (Cengage/Schirmer, 2008), the standard textbook used in introductory
college courses in music technology, and is and is co-editor of the new 2-volume MENC Oxford Research Handbook on Music
Learning (Oxford University Press, 2012).
